Phoonk Opens with An Impressive 90%

by SuperRaJJ on Aug.23, 2008, under Box Office, Entertainment, What's New?

Well, RGV’s latest horror venture, Phoonk has opened to a great response with 85-90% collections all over India. This has more than exceeded everybody’s expectations and was a great surprise to many considering Ram Gopal Varma’s last outing, Contract, had failed at the box office big time and people were not expecting too much out of this one too.

Thing is to see if this film retains it’s momentum or not? As for the other releases, Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam or Mumbai Meri Jaan, they have opened with 15-20 % collections.

Meanwhile, Singh Is Kinng, God Tussi Great Ho and Bachna Ae Haseeno are doing good business and expected to occupy theaters longer.

Singh Is Kinng Rules Pakistan Too!

Well, here’s some more good news for Akshay. Apart from Singh Is Kinng raking in the moolah by the truck loads in US, UK, Gulf and Australia, it is also making dollars (or Pak Rupees) in Pakistan as well:

SINGH IS KINNG is ruling the hearts. In India. In U.K. In America. In Gulf. In Australia. And also Pakistan. Here’s the proof. First, let’s have a look at the day-wise collections in Pakistan:-
Friday: 9,39,748; Saturday: 18,20,881; Sunday: 21,70,047; Monday: 13,10,783; Total: 62,41,459.

For a detailed insight into the collections of Singh Is Kinng in Pakistan, you can always go here. This does bolster the argument that Akshay is as big a draw at the Box Office as Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan are.

I have been a fan of Akshay ever since I saw his movie, Khiladi. Since then, there’s been no turning back for me. I admit there had been movies within a phase from 1995 to 2000 which have been outright turkeys (and I did happen to see those to my utter disappointment). But then what’s fan who deserts his idol in his odd days? Not me. I am In with the Kinng! All Hail to the Kinng, Akshay!

The Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan starrer, Kismat Konnection, opened well this weekend mostly at multiplexes. The film’s 1st week collections stood at Rs.20.60 crores+

Interestingly, the second half of the movie (with the actress, Vidya Balan) makes the film look like a clone of the brilliant Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Om Shanti Om is a Blockbuster

So, the lethal and previously successful combination of Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan has delivered another great blockbuster for the King Khan.

Shahrukh Khan has had three (two in starring roles and one in a guest appearance movie) straight big hits this year and is on fire. Let’s hope he keeps the hits coming in.

Heyy Babyy takes a big start

With reports coming in, as was expected, Heyy Babyy has opened big. With Raksha Bandhan around the corner (Aug, 28th), it is expected to get big numbers. The only question that arises now is, Whether it can overtake the opening week gross of Partner?

Whatever be the case, this one’s a winner and welcome aboard Sajid. Whatever you may have said to the media in interviews regarding you being a serious individual, the only thing that matters to us is that you make us laugh in the end.

Chak De India remains Multiplex fodder

by SuperRaJJ on Aug.19, 2007, under Box Office, Entertainment, News

As reported by me before, Chak De India has picked up business but it remains restricted to the multiplexes. The film ain’t making any progress as far as single screens are concerned.

So, this one’s not a bomb atleast. It is a good movie and I hope it becomes a multiplex hit at the least. Not for Yash Raj Films. Hell, no! It should be a hit for the sake of Shahrukh Khan, for the sake of Shimit Amin and most importantly for Hockey.

One must commend Shahrukh for taking such a big risk and doing a movie on Hockey with no leading lady opposite him.

Chak De India picks up greatly, on its way to be a hit

Shahrukh Khan in Chak De India (Image source: HT)

Well, Shahrukh Khan has done it. He has done what was expected of him. He has revived general interest in the ailing Indian National Sport of Hockey. It moves our interest towards the national sport away from the heavily monetized sport of Cricket (albeit temporarily ;-) ).

Well, the movie may not be very good with it’s script but it has Shahrukh Khan in it and the direction is good. The movie is the story of the underdogs (The Indian Women’s Hockey Team) achieving what was never expected from them.

It is a movie about team spirit. It is a movie about working for a cause together. Like I said in my previously written Box Office report, I wish SRK all the best. I just hope this movie makes a great return.

Best of Luck, SRK. Best of Luck, our National Sport: Hockey.

Chak De India takes a slow start at the Indian Box Office

SRK in Chak De India (Source: SantaBanta.com)

It seems there is no respite for Yash Raj Films this year! With two flops already under it’s belt, they are surely hoping this one to be their money spinner and with King Khan (SRK) leading the cast of this movie, it was supposed to be a safe bet. I guess you win some and you lose some.

The film has opened to a below par attendance at the theaters, although it did manage good showings at the multiplexes, single screen collections were not what was expected of a SRK starrer.

The surprise can be seen in this article which explains all the stats in details, :

While the multiplexes were better, the single screens were dull, which is very surprising. In fact, with the two giants [Yash Raj, SRK] coming together after a hiatus, the film should’ve embarked on a 90% + start from its first show onwards.

It must be noted that Yash Raj Films had a great time with their movies right up till last year. They had been pronounced invincible (almost!). Let us hope this movie goes on to do well.
