Whether you all know or not, I am still gonna give you an intro to Bad Behavior. BB is an excellent plugin (perhaps that’s not a proper way to address a solution that’s much more than that) for WordPress. It protects your WordPress powered blog (which of course which you are self-hosting) against a range of bots, spammers, harvesters and so on.

Bad Behavior v2.0.22 lets you integrate the resources of Project Honey Pot (PHP) in the fight against the bad guys. It all sounds very good, doesn’t it? It should so too. But when I actually registered on PHP and entered my key on BB, Little was I to realize that I was putting myself into deeper mess.

Actually, I was aiming at a good amount of security for my blog with the aim that only real people can access it. With BB+PHP, it is more than good. It’s good but restrictive. I found this out after my ISP’s IP at work was classified as a spamming one. This meant that anybody using the internet with this IP would not be able to access my blog since the IP was tagged in the PHP database.

Now, I tried to access my blog and even the admin area was locked out for me by BB (who I presume was acting as a protector much to my annoyance now). Anyway, I did manage to open my site by using an anonymous service like Anonymizer and then turned off the PHP integration with BB.

For me, it was the worst hours of my blogging (literally). I am quite content with what I have at hand with BB. As a standalone application (yep, that is a pretty much better classification for it rather than the cheap sounding plugin), BB has been more than satisfactory for me and couple that with the reCaptcha Comment Plugin and I have a better life already!

Although, I must admit that BB+PHP is a real solid combination which can keep even you out of your blog! Think what it can do to the millions of spammers out there.

After you read my experience, I hope that you can decide for yourself whether it is a good idea to use PHP integration with BB or not. As for my thoughts on this, I must tell you that no server in the world may be 100 % free from spamming bot attacks. Whether it’s Yours or mine (server), they may be used by spammers either under a camouflage or something like that. So, I leave it upon you to decide.

By the way, I have donated a sub-domain to Project Honey Pot to help them fight the spammers!!!

It’s still a good idea to use Project Honey Pot. Just, first find out which of your co-workers’ computers is sending all that spam! :)

Well, it is a good idea to use PHP and I support it. But since I have to login and work with my own blog, i personally want to stay away for a while until i find out where the spams maybe originating from and until my server is free from the spamming bot! :-)
What I am suggesting in this article is that people are free to use either BB alone or BB+PHP
