As you may have noticed already, I have put up a countdown timer to the 60th anniversary of India’s Independence from Britain (in 1947).
For those who do not know, India achieved it’s Independence from Imperial Great Britain on the 15th of August, 1947. And it formally became a Sovereign Republic on the 26th of January, 1950.
It’s funny how time flies by you (I never said I was at the signing of the declaration of the independence in 1947!). This year has been quite generous and good for our great country, if you discount the floods that have hit the country due to rain.
In the run up to the 60th Independence Day of the Great Democratic Republic of India, I have compiled some of the highs of this year that our country has had:
- Earlier this year the stock markets crossed historic levels (and are still there). With the Sensex (The BSE benchmark Index) crossing the historic 15,000 mark (and stay around it).
- The Growth Rate of the Indian Economy is at an impressive 8.53% with great performance in both the corporate and agricultural sectors.
- The Nuclear Agreement between the US and India was also a major achievement not only for India but for the United States too.
- With the merger of the two Government-controlled Air-India (International) and Indian (mostly catering to the domestic sector and the neighboring countries) into a single autonomous entity, the (new) Air-India, the airline will now be able to serve to a variety of needs the passengers. Also, the new Air-India would be benefiting from the delivery of new aircrafts from both Boeing and AirBus Industrie AG.
- Of course, the IT sector is expected to grow strongly than ever before.
- Earlier this year, The Tata Group’s (A leading industrial conglomerate of India) steel arm, Tata Steel acquired Corus Group of UK in a hotly contested battle. It must be noted that last year, the Lakshmi Mittal controlled, Mittal Steel NV acquired and merged with the Luxemborg based Arcelor (in a somewhat hostile but later successful bid).
All these are just a few of the achievements that our great nation has made. This is just the beginning friends. There’s more to come yet, so don’t read this article and just forget.
We as Indians feel proud to be contributing as much to the world as we pride in achieving for ourselves. This is one quality nobody can achieve unless they work hard and prove themselves. We worked hard when we had nothing. We are working hard when we have some. And hopefully, we will continue to work hard even when we have plenty.
Long live India, Home to some of the world’s better people.
